HOW TO TELL IF YOUR LOCK HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH?

If you notice unusual changes in your lock’s operation or appearance, it's important to stay alert. Here are the most common signs of an attempted break-in:

Damage Around the Keyhole. Scratches, dents, and tool marks (from screwdrivers, crowbars, or lock picks) are clear indications of tampering. Intruders often leave such traces, especially if their initial attempts were unsuccessful. You may also notice scuff marks, glue residue, or other foreign substances left behind in an attempt to cover up the interference.

Lock Becomes Difficult to Use. If your key suddenly fits more tightly, turns with difficulty, or feels too loose, someone may have tampered with the lock. Burglars often use special tools that can damage the internal mechanism. Sometimes, you may even find metal shavings or tiny fragments left behind from a break-in attempt.

Signs of Bumping. Bumping is a common break-in technique using a specially crafted bump key. After such attempts, you might notice small chips or cracks on the lock cylinder. The internal pins may also become deformed, causing the lock to jam or fail to function properly.

Door Frame or Lock Deformation. If your door seems slightly misaligned, has cracks, or visible gaps, it could be the result of a forced entry attempt using a crowbar or similar tool. Pay special attention if the door hinges or frame look weakened or shifted.

Missing or Damaged Security Features. Some high-security locks include protective covers designed to prevent drilling or forced entry. If such a cover is missing or deformed, it may indicate someone tried to gain access. In some cases, criminals may even replace protective elements with less secure versions.

Unusual Lock Behavior. If you return home to find your door unexpectedly unlocked or, conversely, difficult to open, someone may have manipulated the mechanism. A compromised lock might also behave inconsistently—turning too easily, locking itself, or jamming unexpectedly.
